Circular economy

Aim

Introduce circular trading in Somers Town, where things we no longer need or want are repaired, reused and traded to help our community and reduce waste.

What’s happening?

  • Create and test low waste market days for food, textiles and homewares as well as sharing knowledge. These themed market days will be delivered from Autumn 2022 at Chalton Street Market.
  • Central Saint Martins is developing eco-stalls and equipment that will be available to residents of Somers Town for different trade uses at Chalton Street Market.
  • We are delivering workshops and events at the Phoenix Centre, ‘Make’ Space and local estates to train residents to repair and transform belongings like clothes, food and furniture to swap or sell.
  • We are creating local green jobs on the Refill Station Camden stalls, offer training support and volunteer opportunities for residents.

How can I get involved?

  • Unclutter unwanted items from your cupboards and storage spaces by joining the online community for help with moving goods. Sign up at tiptapp.com/en. Enter the new joiner code ‘Somerstown’ to receive £15 to spend on the app.
  • Fancy running your own eco-stall selling quality home items that you no longer need (upcycled or repaired)? Visit Our Little Markets at Troy’s new café ‘Our Little Café’ located inside the Somers Town Community Association building, and tell us what you want to sell so we can support you to trade on Chalton Street Market (Wednesday to Friday).
  • Lifeafterhummus Community Benefit Society at the Phoenix Centre has just launched a ‘Room of Things’. It offers quality items for every room in the house to support local families and individuals.
  • Reusing, upcycling and selling at Chalton Street MarketFind out more at lifeafterhummus.com including how you can donate time, money or surplus food.
  • We have new traders and opportunities at Chalton Street Market including the Refill Station Camden (every Friday). Bring an empty jar or bottle with a lid, and fill up on household products for less. Visit the Story Garden and Make-space if you would like to try your hand at building or making something from reclaimed materials.
  • Find out more about our future series of waste innovation workshops and events, promoting ‘Circular Economy’ growth, on and around Chalton Street Market at camden.gov.uk/choose-to-reuse
