Healthy and climate-safe streets

Aim

To deliver a network of safe, green streets across the neighbourhood, reducing local traffic and pollution as well as encouraging and enabling residents who would like to, to walk and cycle more.

What’s happening?

  • Introduce Healthy School Streets, (consultation now open) which restrict traffic at school drop-off and pick-up times. We will also add plants and trees to improve the look and feel of streets at Maria Fidelis (Drummond Crescent), Edith Neville (Ossulston Street) and Regent High School (Chalton Street).
  • Introduce new cycling infrastructure on Crowndale Road, separating cyclists from other traffic, making cycling easier and safer, and making the cycle lane on Goods Way permanent.
  • Develop and deliver the Greening Phoenix Road project, an east-west corridor at the heart of Somers Town, which will reduce traffic and add extensive planting.
  • Consult on making the existing trial traffic restriction on Oakley Square North permanent, to continue preventing traffic from using it as a cut through between Crowndale Road and Eversholt Street.
  • Deliver a Future Neighbourhoods Street Audit to assess the neighbourhood’s streets from three future perspectives: accessibility, health and climate-resilience.

How can I get involved?

We are currently carrying out a consultation on introducing an 18 month trial of the road closures that would be required to enable space to be provided on Phoenix Road for greening and public realm improvements.

This would provide an opportunity for the Council and community to test how these road closures change vehicle, pedestrian and cycle access through Somers Town and whether any additional traffic changes would be needed as part of the final design for the Phoenix Road scheme.

The consultation is now open until the 30th March for you to share your views.

If you want to share any more general views you can comment on our consultation map
