Reduce the Juice

1/2

Reduce the Juice comes to Somers Town

Reduce the Juice is the University of London’s sustainability engagement programme aimed at promoting sustainable consumption and reduce carbon emissions in halls of residence.

Reduce the Juice is working with Somers Town Community Association to share our knowledge & our experience around reducing food waste.

Did you know?

  • The average UK household could save up to £60 a month just by preventing food waste1.
  • A staggering 70% of food wasted in the UK comes from households2.
  • If food waste were a country, it is estimated that it would be the third highest emitter of greenhouse gases after the US and China3

We want to work with you to help you reduce food waste and hopefully along the way help you to save some money, whilst starting to tackle the climate crisis facing us all.

Engaging with Reduce the Juice

Join us at Chalton Street Market to find out how to reduce food waste and to share your food waste ideas with us. There will be freebies and games.

Each day we are at the market we will run a quiz where we put your food waste knowledge to the test by asking you a food waste related question. The correct entries will be placed into a pool of names and a number of winners will be selected by random. The winner/s will receive a prize which will be aimed at helping the winner reduce food waste further in their everyday life. T&Cs apply.

We will be at the market on the following Fridays:

Somers Town Fighting Food Waste Competition

Brought to you by the National Lottery Climate Action Fund:

Reduce the Juice in Somers Town, delivered by the University of London in collaboration with the STCA, has set up a competition for the residents of Somers Town, particularly those who live in and on the estates.

We’re asking you to show us what actions you’re taking and share how you’re reducing your food waste in your everyday life. For example:

  • Send in your recipes that reduce food waste e.g., bubble and squeak or banana peel curries
  • Send in hints and tips for how you reduce food waste e.g., 'I keep my bananas separate from my other fruit'
  • Pledge an action e.g., ‘I pledge to freeze food that I’m not going to use’

Why should you enter?

The aim of this competition is to bring the community together through a passion for food and a passion for reducing waste.

We want to shout about what the residents of Somers Town are doing to tackle the climate crisis through tackling food waste. We want to share your food waste pledges, hints and tips and recipes with the wider community so that your neighbours can learn new ways of reducing food waste and tackle this issue as a community.

Monthly individual prizes are up for grabs and the estate that submits the most entries will win the competition, so we are going to actively encourage a bit of friendly competition between estates!!

Each resident can submit up to four entries a month, so make the most of yours and you never know it may help your estate to win!

Eligibility

The competition is open to residents of Somers Town aged over 18.

The focus of the competition is on taking community action to reduce and prevent food waste.

Those who love to cook, those who are naturally resourceful in the kitchen, those who cook because they have to and those who are guilty of neglecting vegetables at the back of the fridge are all encouraged to enter.

Prizes

There are individual prizes for our favourite entry of the month and at the end of the competition, a community prize is up for grabs for the winning estate.

  • Individual prizes:

Winning Entry of The Month- the winning entry will be decided by the Reduce the Juice team at the University, and it will be the entry that is the most creative and innovative. The prize will be worth £100 and aimed at helping the winner reduce food waste further in their everyday life and we hope that the winner will allow us to share their winning entry so that the whole community can give it a go.

Honourable Mentions- because we want to shout about your efforts to reduce food waste, a number of entries will be selected as honourable mentions and residents will be asked if their entries can be shared the community.

Winners and Honourable Mentions will both have the opportunity to be recognised by publication by local groups and for their entries to be put into a food waste reduction guide in the form of a pamphlet.

  • Community Prize:

The winning estate- when the competition closes the estate that has submitted the most entries will win a community event to celebrate. We would like this event to be shaped by the community, email us at sustainability@london.ac.uk if you have any suggestions for the community prize.

How to submit

To enter the competition, please fill out this electronic form or enter via a paper form in The Living Centre located at 2 Ossulston St, London NW1 1DF. Remember, each entrant can submit up to four entries each month. T&Cs Apply. If you have any questions, please email sustainability@london.ac.uk.
